GCSE MUSIC (Eduqas) COURSE AIMS This GCSE Music course provides students a creative opportunity to develop performance and compositional skills and to organise their musical ideas. Students have a wealth of opportunities to broaden their musical experience, and foster their creativity and imagination through diverse social and cultural musical experiences. Students use music technologies to create and present music and have wide ranging opportunities to develop as independent and evaluative learners. COURSE CONTENT Unit 1: Performing Solo performance, ensemble performance and approaches to performing Unit 2: Composing Developing musical ideas, compositional techniques and strategies using a variety of DAWs, ensuring technical control and coherence, methods of notating composition scores Unit 3: Involves an in depth study of 2 set works, covering the history of music from the 18th Century to the present day. Area of study 1: Musical Forms and Devices Set work: Badinerie by J.S.Bach for Flute and String Orchestra with Harpsichord (Final movement, Orchestral Suite No.2 in B minor, BWV 1067) Area of study 2: Music for Ensemble Area of study 3: Film Music Area of study 4: Popular Music Set work: Africa: Toto (released 1982) ASSESSMENT Unit 1 – Performing (minimum standard AB grade 3) 30% of GCSE Pupils perform at least 1 solo piece and 1 ensemble piece (one linked to an area of study). Both are recorded, internally assessed and then sent to the board for moderation. 4-6 minutes in length Unit 2 - Composing 30% of GCSE 2 compositions with a combined duration of at least 3-6 minutes (1 piece on a brief set by the exam board and 1 piece free choice) Unit 3: Listening & Appraising examination. 40% of GCSE 1 hr 15 minutes written paper 8 questions based on short audio extracts from the 4 areas of study. One short melody/rhythm completion exercise is included in the paper, linked to one of the areas of study. One extended 10 mark essay question is included in the paper, linked to one of the areas of study. Subject Pathways By studying GCSE Music, pupils develop a wealth of transferable skills and knowledge to pursue a diverse range of careers, including in the creative arts industry. Employers value such a specialised subject as Music because of these skills needed to successfully complete the course.
