Course summary

Course outline The A level dance course is two years in length and has both practical and written components where students will develop their own skills in choreography and performance. They will also gain a much greater understanding of dance through dance history, analysis and appreciation of their own work and that of professional choreographers including Christopher Bruce, Richard Alston, Robert North, Gene Kelly, Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse and dance companies such as Rambert dance company and the American jazz dance genre. Component 1: Performance and choreography (50% practical exam marked live by a visiting external examiner) • Solo performance linked to a specific practitioner within an area of study • Performance in a quartet (in any style, relevant to the defined genres) • Group choreography Component 2: Critical engagement (50% written exam - 2 hours 30 minutes marked externally) • Section A: short answer questions (25 marks) and one essay question (25 marks) on the compulsory set work/area of study • Section B: two essay questions on the second set work/ area of study (25 marks for each essay) Lesson structure and expectations Lessons take a variety of both practical and theoretical forms. There will be teacher and student-led practical sessions; solo and group work, formal lecture and discussion lessons and rehearsal time. Willingness to attend rehearsals, prepare for presentations and attend dance productions out of lesson time is essential. It is compulsory for A level students to attend the Redborne dance company after school rehearsals to develop their skills further. Course requirements A grade 4 in GCSE English and, where taken, a grade 5 in GCSE dance. As an external applicant or non-GCSE dance student you will be invited to an informal interview and perform a piece of your own choreography to demonstrate you are able enough to undertake the A level Dance course Next steps This course can lead to university, dance apprenticeships, teaching, and choreography plus further careers in community arts work, dance administration and as a professional performer.
