Course summary

Course outline A level German is a challenging but fascinating and varied course, which enables students to build up their linguistic skills while developing an understanding of the culture and history of countries where German is spoken. It is possible to sit AS at the end of year 12, since the first year of the course covers the AS topics. Most students, however, will enjoy moving on to the more challenging topics in year 13. In year 12 students will study the changing state of the family, the role of new technology and popular culture, as well as the cultural life of Berlin, art and architecture and festivals and traditions. They will also study a film and work on improving their understanding of German grammar. Year 13 topics include immigration, integration and racism, politics, Germany and the EU and the reunification. Students also study a book and complete an Independent Research Project on a topic of their choice. Lesson structure and expectations A level German lessons are quite varied, but most will include a spoken element to build up fluency and spontaneity. Students will learn to write summaries of spoken and written passages as well as building up their comprehension skills with plenty of reading practice. Grammar will be explained in a systematic way to enable students to grasp concepts and use them in their own German. Students will need to acquire their own personal CD player, since each student has control of their own listening equipment during tests. We expect students to undertake independent listening, reading and research work in addition to regular vocabulary learning. Course requirements A grade 5 in German. Next steps A level German is a qualification which is respected by universities and employers alike and can enhance your long term employment prospects. It can be combined with a wide range of other subjects.
