The A level Drama and Theatre qualification encourages creativity and collaborative working, with a focus on practical work and developing analytical skills that will support progression to further study of drama beyond sixth form and a wide range of other subjects, including English Literature. The course has three elements: 1. Devising (40%) Students are required to study an influential drama practitioner and a set text. Following research, practical explorations and analysis of contextual influences, learners will work as part of a group to create a devised performance. Alongside their performance, students write a portfolio explaining the choices made throughout the devising process and analyse the impact of their final performance on the audience. 2. Performance from set texts (20%) Students are required to study a number of texts and perform a key scene as part of a group. Alongside this, they are required to perform a contrasting scene to showcase a diverse range of performance skills to an examiner. The second performance must be a monologue or duologue. 3. Written exam (40%) Students are required to explore a further set text issued by the exam board and answer questions about staging and acting roles for an unseen extract from the play. Secondly students will need to write a review of a live theatre performance that they have seen, evaluating the production elements and acting skills within the performance. Drama is a practical and dynamic subject which requires commitment and focus. As there is analysis of set texts as well as practical exploration it is preferable that their is an interest in literature. Students could go onto study Drama, Performing Arts or English Literature at degree level or apply for audition opportunities and further training with specialist Drama schools or Performing Arts institutes.
Minimum five GCSE passes (grades 4 or 5) including English Language and Maths. Students must also meet subject specific minimum entry requirements (shown below). GCSE English Literature at Grade 5 is desirable. Consideration will be given to those with relevant experience, commitment and enthusiasm for the subject.
Unit 1 – Devising. Internally moderated, externally assessed. 40% of the overall grade. Unit 2 – Performance from set texts. Externally examined. 20% of the overall grade. Unit 3 – Written exam. Externally set and assessed. 40% of the overall grade.
