Further Mathematics is a separate A Level to Mathematics. However, due to the nature of the content, you must do Mathematics to do Further Mathematics. This is only suitable for very able mathematicians who have a passion for the subject. This course covers a broader range of topics than Mathematics as well as going into greater depth on some topics. The course is made up 50% Pure topics, 25% Statistics and 25% Mechanics topics. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/PROGRESSION Most Mathematics degrees now require Further Mathematics A Level. However, it is not just Mathematics degrees that ask for it. More Engineering degrees are asking for Further Mathematics A Level than ever before and many other degrees such as Computer Sciences and Economics have it as a desirable A Level. Entry requirements

Grade 7 in Mathematics.

How you'll be assessed

You will be studying the specifications offered by the EDEXCEL examination board. The course is divided into Pure and Applied Mathematics modules. For A Level you will complete two Pure Mathematics papers and two Applied Mathematics papers, each one contributing towards a quarter of your final grade. Examinations will be sat at the end of the second year of study. Calculators may be used in all module examinations. The specification is designed to encourage the appropriate use of graphical calculators and computers as tools by which teaching and learning of Mathematics may be enhanced. Calculators must have the ability to perform iterative functions and the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions. We would encourage you to speak to your Mathematics teacher about the appropriate models of calculator.
