Course summary

“The unexamined life is not worth living” (Socrates 469BC-399BC) The OCR A Level in Religious Studies will build on the knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE. Learners will be introduced to a more advanced approach to Religious Studies, and will develop a deeper understanding of the beliefs, teachings and philosophy they study. The content has been designed to provide a coherent and thought-provoking programme of study, whilst also acting as a rigorous course of study which prepares learners for progression to Higher Education. This qualification is designed to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of religious beliefs and teachings, as well as the disciplines of ethics and philosophy of religion. Learners will develop their skills of critical analysis in order to construct balanced, informed arguments and responses to religious, philosophical and ethical ideas. In Philosophy of religion learners will study philosophical issues and questions raised by religion and belief. These include arguments regarding the existence or nonexistence of God, the nature and influence of religious experience and the problems of evil and suffering. They will also explore philosophical language and thought, through significant concepts and the works of key thinkers, illustrated in issues or debates in the philosophy of religion. Religion and ethics is characterised by the study of ethical language and thought, with exploration of key concepts and the works of influential thinkers. Ethical theory will also be applied to issues of importance; namely euthanasia, business ethics, and sexual ethics. Developments in Christian thought provides an opportunity for the systematic study of the Christian tradition. This will include the exploration of Christian beliefs, values, teachings and practices that shape Christian identity, as well as sources of wisdom and authority. Also central are the ways in which Christianity has developed over time, and Christian responses to challenges and significant contemporary social issues. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/PROGRESSION The study of Philosophy, Ethics and Christian Thought is stimulating and challenging and is very good preparation for Higher Education and Research based careers and the nature of the course and examination requires detailed critical analysis and evaluation. Student become competent in how evidence is validated and confident in joining in the debate. Students who have completed this course find it has given them a thoughtful and analytical understanding of humanity which has helped them in the workplace and in their own personal understanding of the importance of life and human flourishment. Our students have moved into a career in a range of industries because the subject is so multidisciplinary, it trains your mind and gives insight into human nature and aspirations. These qualities are sought by many employees in areas diverse as the commercial sector, journalism, the legal profession, social services, health care and public services including the police.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in RE plus Grade 5 in English Language. If not taken RE Grade 6 in a Humanities subject plus Grade 5 in English Language.

How you'll be assessed

Each component of the course is assessed through a written examination at the end of the two-year course.
