Course summary

Why take the course? Music A Level offers the opportunity to study music in considerable depth. It will improve your knowledge of styles and genres and enable you to develop into an outstanding performer and composer. Music A Level is both a practical and academic course. You will develop your own compositional style, performing skills and your understanding of music. Summary of what is studied (specification) Year 12: You will improve performing and composing skills and develop a stronger understanding of music theory. You work towards completing one composition (free) by the Summer Term and several performance assessments. You will begin work on the three areas of study: A) Development of the Symphony 1750-1900 focusing on Haydn Symphony 104 in D Major; B) Into the Twentieth Century focusing on the works of Poulenc and Debussy; C) Musical Theatre focusing on the works of Rodgers, Bernstein, Lloyd-Webber, Sondheim, Schönberg and Schwartz. Year 13: You will continue your studies from Year 12 and prepare for examination in March (Performing), April (Composing submission) and June (Appraising written examination). You choose either a performing or a composing pathway and will be advised which pathway to take based on your strengths. Where could this qualification take you? Entry requirements

Grade 6 in Music and Grade 5 in one instrument/voice. Grade 5 theory is desired, or if not achieved, a strong commitment to undertake extra theory work to reach a similar standard during the early part of Year 12.
