Course summary

Studying A Level PE will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have a chance to perform, you will develop a wide ranging knowledge into the how and why of sport. The emphasis is on the development of your knowledge, competence and confidence in a wide variety of skills that will confidently move you forward in life. You will learn how PE affects and contributes to society and also how to apply your knowledge from this course to any number of career choices. Some examples of topics covered are; joints, movement and muscles, cardiovascular system, diet and nutrition, methods of training, impact of sedentary lifestyle, injuries, rehabilitation, group and team dynamics, goal setting, leadership in sport, stress management, sport in the 21st century, ethics in sport, commercialisation and the media, modern technology in sport and its impact on entertainment and outcomes and many more. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/PROGRESSION A Level PE is an excellent base for a university degree in sports science, sports management, healthcare, physiotherapy or exercise and health. PE can also complement further study in biology, physics, psychology, nutrition, sociology and many more.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in PE plus Grade 5 in Science.

Paper: Physiological factors affecting performance (2 hours, 30% of overall mark) Paper: Physiological factors affecting performance (1 hour, 20% of overall mark) Paper: Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport (1 hour, 20% of overall mark) Performance: Practical performances (one practical, 15% of overall mark) Talk: Evaluating and analysing performance for improvement (oral, 15% of overall mark)
