AS Topic 1: UK Politics This topic explores democracy and participation, elections and referendums, political parties and the role of pressure groups in UK politics. Topic 2: UK Government This topic explores the British constitution, Parliament, the Prime Minister and the executive, as well as the relationship between the branches of government. A Level Topic 3: Core Political Ideas This topic explores three core political ideologies: conservation, liberalism and socialism. Topic 4: Non-core Political ideas - Nationalism This topic explores ideas and principles behind nationalism, different types of nationalism and nationalist thinkers and their ideas. Topic 5: Comparative Politics - Government & Politics of the USA. This topic explores the US Constitution and federalism, US Congress, US Presidency, US Supreme Court and civil rights, democracy and participation and comparative theories. Other skills developed The skills of knowledge recall, interpretation and evaluation are all examined. The course will develop the capacity of students to deal with complex data from a variety of sources and to organise structured arguments. It offers students the opportunity of dealing in an informed way with the important issues of our time.
