Course summary

Course outline This exciting practical course is perfect for creative students who have a passion for design. It enables them to develop their understanding of varied skills and techniques required within different areas of the fashion industry. Through practical experience of design, production and fashion promotion, learners will spot future trends and develop designs that reflect commercial and contextual influences. They will learn to adapt and draft patterns, refining their use of complex manufacturing skills to turn their designs into reality. The qualification also allows learners to develop project planning and communication skills through vocational projects that refine their technical abilities, often working with industry experts. This course is taught over 540 guided learning hours, but the qualification is equivalent to 1 A level. 2 mandatory units are completed over the two years, both of which are made up of practical-based assignments with supporting written work. Students are assessed using a range of styles suited to vocational qualifications. Students must complete both years to gain accreditation and can earn up to 84 points towards their UCAS entry for university, which is the equivalent of A* at A level. This BTEC course meets the admission requirements for most relevant University courses, such as visual communication, digital media, art subjects, product design, interior and architecture, fashion and textiles. Lesson structure and expectations The course is taught through skills based workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to use private study time in addition to the guided learning hours for each unit in order to gain and embed the skills and knowledge required to succeed. Trips are organised to provide primary research opportunities and students are encouraged to visit other fashion exhibitions in their own time where possible. Course requirements A grade 4 in English language, along with a 5 (or equivalent) in a design based subject (e.g. textiles, graphics, product design or art). Next steps Employers worked in conjunction with higher education providers to develop this BTEC qualification as a creative alternative to A levels. The diversity of the course allows students to gain direct entry to university, including highly prestigious institutions such as London College of Fashion. This course will prepare students for a wide variety of apprenticeships and degree courses including: Fashion or textile design, textile technology, pattern cutting, fashion marketing and communication, fashion retail, theatre design and other art and design related courses.
