Course outline Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a qualification designed for students who enjoy maths but do not want to follow the traditional A level maths course. This is a one year course* designed to consolidate students’ mathematical understanding and build their confidence and competence in applying mathematical techniques to solve a range of problems as well as introducing them to new techniques and concepts. Content covered includes: Data Analysis – types of data, sampling methods, averages and the representation of data by drawing mathematical diagrams. Personal finance – spreadsheets and formulae, percentage calculations, interest rates, student loans, mortgages, income tax, national insurance, VAT, inflation, budgeting and exchange rates. Estimation – representing situations mathematically, selecting appropriate techniques and making estimates. Critical analysis of data and models – presenting a logical argument and comparing the results from a model with real data. Assessment is through two written papers each of 90 minutes consisting of short and extended answer questions. In both of the papers, questions in the exam will be based in contexts from a data sheet that is issued approximately two weeks prior to the examination. Lesson structure and expectations Students will have 9 lessons a fortnight. All students are expected to have a scientific calculator with statistical functions to use in lessons. Students are also expected to have a lever arch file to keep all their notes organised. Course requirements A grade 4 in mathematics.
