Assessment
This course looks at the application of Chemistry and Chemical Techniques and Processes. There is ample opportunity for hands-on practical work throughout. Units studied include: Physical Chemistry Units: e.g Atomic Structure, Amount of Substance, Bonding, Energetics, Kinetics, Chemical Equilibria, Le Chatelier’s Principle, Oxidation, Reduction & Redox Equations, Thermodynamics, Rate Equations, Equilibrium etc. Inorganic Chemistry Units: Periodicity, Group 2; The Alkaline Earth Metals, Group 7(17), The Halogens, Properties of Period 3 Elements & Their Oxides, Transition Metals, Reactions of Ions in Aqueous Solution. Organic Chemistry Units: Introduction to Organic Chemistry, Alkanes, Halogenoalkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols, Organic Analysis, Optical Isomerism, Amino Acids, Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Chromatography etc. The AS Level is assessed by two examination papers at the end of year 12 both worth 50%. The A Level is assessed by three written papers at the end of year 13 worth 35%, 35% & 30%.
