Course summary

Law is concerned with understanding the English legal system, how laws are made and operate, and the practical application of legal rules to problem scenarios. In the first part of the course, you will develop knowledge and understanding of the legal system, including the law-making process in Parliament and the role of magistrates and juries. The second introduces aspects of criminal and civil law. You will examine a range of non-fatal offences against the person, court procedure and sentencing and then learn how to identify negligence, take a claim to court and calculate an award of damages. In the second year, the course develops the knowledge and skills already acquired, although the focus moves to fatal offences against the person, a range of defences and the law of contract. Students must be able to identify and analyse offences in a scenario. In addition, you will study the views of philosophers such as Aristotle, Bentham and Rawls.
