Course summary

If you're thinking about a career in health and social care but not ready to commit entirely to a purely work related course, the National Extended Certificate gives you an introduction to the sector whilst allowing you to study other subjects alongside it. Equivalent in size to one A Level, if you take it as part of a programme of study that includes other work related or academic Level 3 qualifications it can help you to move on to to a wide range of higher education and training opportunities. You'll explore human growth and development through the different stages of life and the genetic, environmental, social and economic factors that affect them. You'll find out about the physical, psychological and social effects of aging. You'll take a look at what it's like to work in the health and social care sector and the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations within it. You'll get an understanding of the principles and values that underpin good quality care and support and have the chance to focus on physiological disorder topics relevant to different pathways in the sector. Through classroom-based lessons including group work, case study, discussion and role play activities as well as individual assignments. There will be visits to and speakers from health and social care organisations.
