Course summary

Geography is concerned with addressing key ideas and debates in our world today such as climate change, globalisation, urban regeneration and management of the world’s resources. Students will explore a range of issues and examine potential solutions to them. You will benefit from having an interest in the world around you, be it curiosity about how a landscape has formed, or an interest in how a community might be affected by transnational corporations. You need to be prepared to leave the classroom and see for yourself what is going on. The world we live in is changing, geography allows you to see why and how it is changing. It can enhance communication skills, literacy and numeracy, IT literacy, spatial awareness, team working, problem-solving and environmental awareness. You will study global themes, including globalisation and climate change. You will discover how your actions can relate to the wider world, be it your local area or a country far away. You will have an opportunity to undertake geographical research, including fieldwork. You will investigate topics such as tectonic hazards, climate change futures, globalisation and superpowers. You will also develop practical research skills. Students take part in a residential field trip to Southwold to collect data for their investigation.
