History
Course summary
History enables us to understand the human journey and the consequences of our actions. It develops the analytical skills of students and enables them to evaluate the significance of the past and form sound judgments. The course is divided into three clear sections. Firstly, the Tudors: England 1485-1603. This will include some of the following topics: ● How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy? ● How did relations with foreign powers change and how was the succession secured? ● How far did intellectual and religious ideas change and develop and with what effects? Secondly, Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918- 1945. This will include the newly developed democratic form of government that gave way to a dictatorial Nazi regime. It also encourages reflection on how governments work and the problems of democratic states as well as consideration of what creates and sustains a dictatorship. The final part is the Historical Investigation which comprises a 4,500-word study into 100 years. This will be on the causes of the Russian Revolution and the collapse of Tsarism 1825-1917. With your analytical, writing, debate, and detective skills, you’ll be primed for a huge range of careers and related degree courses including law (where it is a preferred subject), politics, public sector, business, marketing, journalism, economics, teaching, academia, insurance, social research, archaeology and curation (museums, galleries, archives and libraries).
