Course summary

This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put your learning in to practice by producing prototypes of your choice. You will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers. This is delivered by a very creative team through a combination of written theory lessons, practical activities and a non-examined (NEA) coursework task in year 13. Taught through a blend of student driven research, design and make projects, presentations and written assignments in a relaxed atmosphere with facilities which include specialist computer rooms, CAD CAM equipment including CNC routers, 3D printing and laser cutters. You will work in a sketchbook, produce a digital portfolio and build a bank of design and make skills that will allow you to continue your studies after sixth form. Specialist staff deliver this course and you will also be supported by high level technician assistance. We run an ‘open house’ policy so that our Key Stage 5 students can have access to facilities and staff support any time during the school week.
