Course summary

Further maths is a challenging qualification that both extends and deepens your knowledge beyond the standard A Level. It is designed to stretch and challenge able mathematicians and prepare them for university courses in mathematics and related quantitative and scientific subjects. Further Maths qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities. Some prestigious universities may require you to have a further maths qualification and others may adjust their entry requirements more favourably for students with further maths. You study further maths in addition to A Level maths. Further maths broadens your mathematical skills and promotes deeper mathematical thinking, developing all the algebraic skills from mathematics A Level. You will be introduced to interesting new areas of pure mathematics such as complex numbers, matrices, and hyperbolic functions. This makes up 50% of the course. 25% of the course sees you study statistics in greater depth including the Poisson distribution and chi-squared tests. The remaining 25% of the courses build upon the mechanics studied in the A Level course and will include motion in a circle, work, energy, and power.
