Assessment

The course consists of two components which may be subject to change by AQA. Component 1: Personal investigation This is a practical investigation supported by written material of between 1000 and 3000 words. Students are required to conduct a practical investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student and must lead to a finished outcome or a series of finished outcomes. Component 1 carries 96 marks and contributes to 60% of the A Level. Mode of assessment The non-exam assessment is set and marked by the department and moderated by AQA during a visit to the School. Visits normally take place in June. Component 2: Externally set assignment This is an assignment set by AQA which will be provided to students on 1 February, or as soon as possible after that date. The examination paper will consist of a choice of eight questions to be used as starting points. Students are required to select one. Following a period of preparatory work students must produce a finished outcome, or series of outcomes, in 15 hours of supervised time. Once the supervised time begins students may refer to their preparatory work but must not amend or add to it. Component 2 carries 96 marks and contributes to 40% of the A Level. Mode of assessment The externally set assignment is set and marked by the department and moderated by AQA during a visit to the School. Visits normally take place in June.
