Biology
Assessment
In the Lower Sixth, the OCR course incorporates topics such as cell structure, biochemistry, biodiversity, transport systems and DNA. These important biological ideas are used to consider practical applications in modern society, particularly regarding health and disease. In the Upper Sixth, topics for study include further studies in physiology including nervous and hormonal communication, and excretion, biochemistry including photosynthesis and respiration, and genetics and gene technology. Biology is a practical science and there will be plenty of opportunities for pupils to engage in experimental work. This aspect of the course will be teacher-assessed. Pupils also undertake ecological investigations both on the school grounds and under normal circumstances, 2 day trips to the FSC at Juniper Hall. Records of the pupil’s practical work will be submitted towards the Practical Endorsement.
