This A Level is examined at the end of Year 13. The course followed is Pearson Edexcel 9DT0. COMPONENT 1 (50%) Written paper (2 hours 30 minutes) – Principles of Design and Technology - The study of theoretical concepts and knowledge related to product design, including the use of ICT in manufacturing, the influences of designers from the past and the need to consider sustainability in all future design. COMPONENT 2 (50%) Coursework – Independent design and make project - You identify a client/user group for who you must design and make a product that meets the original need. You will liaise with your client/user group in order to develop a commercial product. You are encouraged to be creative and are given the freedom to choose your own project. There are no limits to project selection beyond the time and resources available. The coursework will take the form of a substantial design portfolio and making (using appropriate tools and materials) a high quality outcome, that could be a fully functioning product, a concept or architectural/interior design scale model.
