Government and Politics
Course summary
There are three areas of study including UK government and politics, political ideologies and global politics. Within the UK government and politics area of study, you will examine political parties, their systems and pressure groups, as well as elections, electoral systems and voting behaviour. You will also explore the composition, role and powers of the legislative and executive branches of the UK government as well as the judiciary, constitution and rights of the individual and the EU. The second area of study will allow you to explore political ideologies including liberalism, conservatism, socialism and feminism, as well as some of the great thinkers of intellectual history including Burke, Marx and Locke. The third area of study will give you an understanding of global politics. This involves the study of the key theories of international relations, as well as an investigation of the global institutions that shape the UK’s external environment followed by the topics of power and regionalism.
