Course summary

English Language offers an opportunity to develop a detailed analytical understanding of the way language works, the way it is used and the ways in which it is closely intertwined with social values. The A Level course explores the evolution of language from the earliest times right up to the changes which are taking place due to the technology of today. It will enable students to develop a wide range of skills essential for further studies and employment. As a result of studying this subject, students will develop a critical understanding of a variety of texts, both written and spoken. They will be guided through the fundamental building blocks of language and its use (grammar, structure and style), hone their analytical skills as they respond to texts, learn how to write for a range of audiences and purposes, and express informed and independent opinions.
