Course summary

Chemistry is the study of matter and materials. The understanding of observations and patterns from practical work is obtained through the use of ideas such as the Particle Model and Bohr’s Atomic Model. Chemistry is an excellent choice of subject for students looking to pursue a career in health and clinical professions such as veterinary science, medicine or pharmacy. The subject will also equip for a career in industry, for example in petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals or chemical engineering. Chemistry A level is a well-regarded facilitating subject as it develops numerical skills along with those of literacy and problem-solving. The study of Chemistry at Rendcomb involves active learning and practical work. Students are guided to develop their laboratory skills, to plan and conduct investigations and synthesis and to make accurate and precise observations. There is the opportunity to conduct independent project work and make use of our university standard equipment to conduct gas chromatography. The OCR course develops concepts such as chemical kinetics, thermodynamics and organic synthesis. At the end of year 12, students will complete project work in associated topics such as analytical chemistry, organic synthesis and chemical engineering. Students have the opportunity to hear from leading professionals representing the chemical sciences and take part in workshops and lectures. There is the opportunity for students to compete in national, competitions such as RSC Schools Analyst, Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad.
