Course summary

A‐level Maths is split into pure and applied sections. Pure maths builds on and considerably extends the number and algebra work covered in the higher tier GCSE/IGCSE course and also incorporates integration. Applied maths uses these pure skills in mechanics and statistical contexts. Mathematics develops problem-solving and analytical skills; mathemaƟcians are valued for their ability to work methodically and carefully and also for their creativity and ability to apply ideas to new situations and problems. Teaching will be a mixture of discussion, notes and examples, as well as regular opportunities to solve problems and prove results. Exercises on each topic will be set and marked regularly; it is using these exercises together with thorough and continuous learning of new material that most of a student’s learning takes place. In statistics, pupils will be taught many of the required techniques concerning a large data set and the use of technology is encouraged to make this process more efficient.
