Course summary

To study A-level History you need an interest in the world around you, an enquiring mind and the ability to weigh up different evidence and arguments. You should like learning about people, how they interact and what motivates them. History is a very well respected academic subject because it teaches many skills that are vital in academic study and for employment in general. The history student acquires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to be critical of the evidence put before them, to analyse it in order to identify facts and motives, and to present information clearly for others to understand. You must enjoy thinking for yourself and developing your own views. History is useful if you wish to study subjects such as Law, Politics, Journalism, Economics or English Literature. It develops skills relevant to many types of employment, either directly related to history or in areas such as journalism, libraries, national and local government and the civil service.
