Classical Civilisation
Course summary
Truly one of the broadest subjects that can be studied at school, Classical Civilisation focuses upon the civilisations of Greece and Rome. The subject has enjoyed a rising profile for a number of years and provides a rich vein of material for the literary, film, TV, and video gaming industries. The scope of the optional modules within this subject are vast. They range from the Late Bronze Age of Greece (mid second millennium BC) to the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century AD. The achievements of these civilisations continue to affect us deeply today. Pupils will get to grips with ancient literature, material culture, ancient thought and ideas, and will become adept at negotiating ancient historical context. The use of modern secondary sources to develop intuitive skills in comparing and contrasting historical perspectives is a key element of this course.
