Course summary

Music plays a central part in the life of Norwich School, from the daily hymn in cathedral assemblies, concerts, recitals, instrumental studies, ensemble playing, composition and choral music. There are numerous events held each year, including masterclasses, concerts, workshops, competitions, educational visits and outreach opportunities. There are three elements to the A level music course; composition, appraisal and performance. Pupils need to be able to perform 10 minutes of music to Grade 8 standard by U6. The performance is recorded. The appraisal component requires the pupil to study a number of set works and composers and accurately answers questions on contextual, analytical and aural matters. The current topics are: • Trumpet Sonata in D – Purcell • Flute Concerto in D Il Gardellino – Vivaldi • Violin Concerto in A minor BWV 1041 – J.S. Bach • Nocturne in E minor op. 72 no.1 and Ballade in F major op.38 – Chopin • Intermezzo in A major and Ballade in G minor op.188 – Brahms • Notturno and March from Lyric Pieces – Grieg
