Course summary

Why study Core Maths Studies? Core Maths Studies is the qualification for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but are not planning to take AS or A Level Mathematics. At the end of the course, you will come out with a Level 3 qualification – with equivalent UCAS points to an AS Level. What will I be studying? There is a compulsory element of the course, which focuses on the analytics of data, financial mathematics, estimation and the critical analysis of given data and models. Further to that, we study some optional content which is one of statistical techniques, critical path and risk analysis; or mathematical modeling using graphical techniques. How will I be studying? Core Maths Studies builds on GCSE Mathematics with a sharper focus on problem-solving skills by considering and tackling mathematics in meaningful contexts. This includes financial applications of mathematics as well as further statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects they will be studying such as Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography, Sociology and even History. The course will be led by Mathematics teachers, but it is expected that student interest in the aspects being studied will spill over in to other subjects and spark discussion with teachers and students of other subjects. How will Core Maths Studies help me in the future? The Core Maths Studies course will give you confidence in using relatively simple mathematics in complex situations. You will learn to use mathematics critically and help you make sensible and informed decisions.
