Course summary

The primary aims of the course are to promote an interest in and enjoyment of the study of living organisms, to develop an understanding of Biology and to appreciate its significance to ourselves and to the world in which we live. This is achieved by focusing on aspects of the subject that are relevant to our everyday lives and possible career requirements. You should study Biology primarily because you find it interesting and would like to find out more about the fascinating world of the living organism. It is a rewarding challenge for scientifically competent students, and it provides the opportunity to develop many skills such as problem-solving and research. The specification covers all aspects of Biology from molecules and cells through biological systems to genetics, evolution, biotechnology and ecology. In all cases, the applied aspects of Biology are emphasised but the teaching also ensures that a thorough understanding of the basic principles is achieved.
