Course summary

A Level Fine Art encompasses traditional and digital 2D artistic disciplines, methodologies and processes. Students confident in drawing and painting are always encouraged to undertake this course. You will work in one or more area(s) of Fine art, such as drawing, painting, mixed-media, installation and printmaking. As a Fine Art student, you will engage and expand your visual research, sustained by painting and other appropriate experimentation with diverse traditional and digital materials and processes including the thoughtful critique of 2D artworks. Like Art, Craft and Design, your art practice should form a means of personal enquiry and expression. Anyone wishing to pursue a career in the Visual Arts should undertake this course as it enables and prepares students who apply for Fine Art Undergraduate Courses.

Entry requirements

Offers will be conditional on reaching the required minimum grade in the GCSE subjects students plan to pursue at A Level. In addition, students will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or IGCSEs) in Grade 6 and above, including Maths and English Language as a requirement to join our Sixth Form. Please note that we will need to see confirmation of exam results upon their publication. Students are expected to have achieved Grade 7 or above in the GCSE Art & Design or Design & Technology course. A strong drawing ability and a creative eye are essential. A crucial aspect of Fine Art is being responsible and working with a passion for the completion of your 2D artwork.

How you'll be assessed

Component 1: Personal Investigation: This component is weighted 60% of the total qualification. It is a practical investigation supported by a sketchbook (a collection of personal 2D artwork). Students are required to conduct a practical investigation of a provided idea, issue, concept or theme. The focus of the research must be identified independently by the student and lead to the production of a series of paintings, drawings and other 2D media. The investigation should be a coherent, in-depth study which shows clear development from initial intentions to an outcome or outcomes informed by relevant critical and contextual materials. Component 2: Externally Set Assignment: This component is weighted 40% of the total qualification and is released in the Lent Term of Year 13. Question papers have eight themes; you must select one theme and use it as a starting point. Students will be provided with exam papers on 1st February or as soon as possible after that date. Finally, this component incorporates two major elements: preparatory studies and the 15 hours of unaided supervised time.
