COURSE CONTENT Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology (50% of the qualification) • Performance characteristics of materials • Processes and techniques • Digital technologies • Factors influencing the development of products • Potential hazards and risks • Features of manufacturing industries • Designing for maintenance and the cleaner environment • Current legislation • Information handling • Modelling and forward planning Assessment: Written Paper – 2hrs 30 mins This paper includes: calculation, short open response questions and extended written questions, for example - analysis and evaluation of design decisions and outcomes against a technical principle for prototypes made by others, and analysis and evaluation of wider issues in Design and Technology including social, moral, ethical and environmental impacts. 15% of this paper will be higher tier (and above) Maths-based questions. Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project (50% of the qualification) Students will produce a substantial design, make and evaluate project which consists of a portfolio and a working prototype. There are four parts to the assessment covering the identification of a design problem, developing the design, making the prototype and evaluation of both the design and the final prototype. Assessment This project will be internally assessed and externally moderated.
