Core Mathematics

Course summary

Mathematics in Context (Level 3 Core Maths) is a AS level qualification for students who have passed GCSE at Grade 5 or above but have decided not to study A level Mathematics. Core Maths builds upon and strengthens the existing skills developed during their GCSE Maths course. There is a sharper focus on problem-solving and using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to students’ everyday lives. The skills developed in the study of Mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education. Universities have welcomed the new Core Maths qualification as students will be better equipped with the mathematical skills that are required for many degree courses. Studying Core Maths will help students improve their career choices. There are four content strands selected on the basis of their relevance and application to a wide range of areas of study and employment:  Applications of Statistics  Linear Programming  Probability  Sequences and Growth
