Course summary

Students will complete eight mandatory units and the qualification will provide the core knowledge and skills needed to prepare young people to work in the engineering sector. The course will cover topics such as: • Engineering design process • Scientific principals used by engineers to identify the most suitable materials • Engineering context • Using maths as an aid to model and solve problems across a range of practical engineering contexts • Mechanical engineering systems and components, and their applications • Engineering products and systems for consumers and industry • The relevance and role that manufacturing processes and systems have in production of multiple components • How to manage industrially sourced design projects • The use of 3D parametric modelling software in the design process • The systematic approaches to design, such as design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) Unit Breakdown • Students who take double design engineering will study 8 units: • Unit 1 – Materials technology and science • Unit 2 – Mechanical systems • Unit 3 – Mathematics for engineers • Unit 4 – Engineering design • Unit 5 – Production and manufacturing • Unit 6 – Design visualisation • Unit 7 – Advanced design for manufacture • Unit 8 – Design engineer project management
