Course summary
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course? Students choosing this course should be passionate about Media and the role that it plays in contemporary culture, society and politics. They will be interested in the way that it can be used to shape our perceptions of the world through the representations, ideas and points of view they offer and understand the real relevance and importance in our lives today. They should be able to analyse images and text and be able to demonstrate an effective argument as to why they have been used. What will I learn on this course? Learners will: • Develop skills of enquiry, critical thinking, decision-making and analysis and demonstrate a critical approach to media issues • Demonstrate appreciation and critical understanding of the media and their role both Historically and currently in society, culture, politics and the economy • Develop an understanding of the dynamic and changing relationships between media forms, products, industries and audiences. What skills will I develop by doing this course? This course is for students who enjoy working within the area of media and media production and have a passion for the economic importance of media and its impact on society. However, it is not just aimed at students who wish to pursue careers in the various media industries. It is a wide ranging course that will develop numerous transferable skills such as: • Communication skills – building confidence with public speaking and presentations. • Group/social/team building skills. • Imagination and creativity using various media mediums • Various analytical skills What kind of student is this course suitable for? The course will appeal to students whohave an interest in: • Various media sectors such as, publishing, games, film or radio • Human behaviour and different cultures • Analysis and interpreting texts • Design and the way things work within industry What could I go on to do at the end of my course?
