English Literature A Level
Course summary
In the first year, we prepare students for the AS-Level exams. For this we study Shakespeare’s problem play “Measure for Measure”, the American play by Tennessee Williams “A Streetcar Named Desire”, Carter’s short stories based on fairy tales “The Bloody Chamber” and a collection of Christina Rossetti poems. In the second year, students write two pieces of coursework on a play, a novel and poetry that students can select. Then we compare the Gothic elements of “The Bloody Chamber” with “Dracula.” “Measure for Measure” is then used to contrast with a play by a Shakespeare contemporary Webster titled “The Duchess of Malfi.”
