FAQs

When will I know if I have a place?

We send out conditional offers in March, and then final offers are made following results day in August. Conditional offers are not a guarantee of a place but accepting your offer lets us know you still wish to be considered for a place once you receive your results. You can always change your mind at any point, and we do not share offers with other schools nor do we receive information about their offers. You can apply to and accept offers at as many 6th Forms or colleges as you want but you can only enrol to study with one.

How many subjects can I choose?

You must choose at least 3 A Level subjects, and may choose up to 4 subjects. These must fall into different option blocks, which will become clearer once you submit your application. Subject availability and option blocks are open to change depending on staffing and timetabling. Any major changes such as a whole subject being dropped will be made clear before enrolment.

What if I change my mind about which subjects I want to study?

You can change your subject choices at enrolment following Results Day in August, to any subjects that you have achieved the minimum entry requirements. If you need to speak to a member of staff about your choices you can speak to your tutor or a member of the 6th Form team, and there will be staff available at school for conversations on Results Day.

I have a sibling in the secondary school, will I count under the sibling criterion?

If you currently or will have a sibling on roll in years 7-11 at the time you would begin school (September), you count under the sibling oversubscription criteria. For more information about who counts as a sibling please see our admission arrangements. As a 6th Former, you do not count as a sibling under the oversubscription criteria for children coming into the secondary school years 7-11 or other siblings joining the 6th Form.

I live in BS15 / BS16, which criterion will I be considered under?

Our "inner" and "outer" areas are defined as those postcodes within the Bristol City Council local authority area (inner), and anyone not in the Bristol City Council local authority area (outer). BS15 and BS16 have a split with some postcodes falling into each area. Those in the inner area have priority for admission over those in the outer area, but that is not to say we never consider those in the outer area. You can check your local authority using the Government's postcode checker: https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council

I live outside the Bristol postcode area BS1 to BS16, can I still apply?

Yes. All applicants will be considered against the published oversubscription criteria, in order of priority, as set out in the admission arrangements 2024/25. Living “out of area” does not mean your application will not be considered.

Do you need to attend Church to apply to BCCS?

No. The school is a Church of England faith school but we accept applications from families of all faiths and none. Faith is not an oversubscription criterion for the School.

How does the waiting list work?

We carry waiting lists for all year groups at BCCS. If students decide not to take up their offer of a place, or leave us once they have started, we use the waiting list to allocate places if that student leaving means we are under our published admission number (PAN). Where in any year the school receives more applications for Sixth Form places than there are places available, a waiting list will operate until 31 December in the year of entry. This will be maintained by the Academy Trust and it will be open to any student or their parent/carer to ask for their name to be placed on the waiting list, following an unsuccessful application. The school will keep a list, ranked against the oversubscription criteria outlined in our Admission Arrangements, of those applying for entry to Year 12 who are not made a conditional offer at Easter. Any of those students meeting the academic entry requirements on GCSE results day in August will be considered for a place if any students who were previously offered places, conditional upon meeting the above academic entry criteria, do not achieve their grades or do not take up their offer of a place in the sixth form. All applications received after the closing date will be considered as late applications. Late applications will be considered after those received on time and will be considered after GCSE results day. If, following consideration of all applicants the school is oversubscribed, parents/applicants may request that they/their child be placed on the school’s waiting list.

Why can't you guarantee my subject selection?

While every effort is made to ensure our subject offering is varied and suits the majority of students, there are a number of factors meaning we can't guarantee that all courses will run from September. This can be due to staffing, lack of interest in the course, or other factors beyond out control. Wherever possible our 6th Form team will help students find a solution to study subjects that will help them achieve their goals within the subjects we are able to offer. For courses we are able to run, there are limited spaces and some courses fill up very quickly. All initial offers made are conditional not only on entry grades but also on spaces. We allocate spaces in line with our oversubscription criteria and this is not done on a first come, first served basis.
