Course summary

This course builds on GCSE-level Mathematics emphasizing how mathematical ideas are interconnected and can be applied to help make sense of data, to understand the physical world, and to solve problems in a variety of contexts. It prepares you for further study and employment in a wide range of disciplines involving the use of mathematics. There are three main areas of mathematics studied during the A-level course: • Pure – the foundation of all mathematics and includes topics such as algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. • Mechanics – the mathematics of forces and motion as applied to objects or systems. • Statistics – involves the extension of ideas of data handling, correlation, and probability, to be able to draw conclusions or answer questions like ‘Does drug X reduce heart attacks? WHY SHOULD I STUDY MATHEMATICS? Mathematics is a crucial part of many other A-level subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Computer Science and Engineering. The numerical, reasoning and problem-solving skills you acquire in A-level Mathematics are easily transferred to these subjects and will aid you in your learning. Additionally, if you intend to study courses such as Geography or Psychology which feature statistical content, A-level Mathematics will enhance your knowledge and increase your confidence in this area too. Studying A-level Mathematics develops your logical thinking, analytical, resilience and time management skills. These skills are highly valued by both employers and universities and are useful in everyday life. Some future progression routes such as Actuarial Science, Engineering (various forms), Physics, Statistics and Mathematics require you to study mathematics at A-level. Other progression routes such as Economics, Accounting, Chemistry, Management Studies, Surveying, Architecture, Medical Pathways, Physiotherapy, Computer Science and Business Studies suggest that A-level Mathematics would be beneficial to have but not essential (mathscareers.org.uk).
