Welcome Message

Thank you for considering RGS for your Sixth Form A level options. When studying with us it is important that you acknowledge that we are offering full time education, and therefore students should expect to engage with extended study outside of their timetabled lessons, beyond just the work set by their teachers. Students who excel in their A levels are proactive, and take steps to engage with their learning at all times, not just when directed to.

Lessons in Sixth Form are engaging and thought provoking, delivered by staff who have academic expertise. Students should expect to be active participants in their learning, rather than being passive.  Our lessons are well resourced, with knowledge banks and non-contact materials provided in all subjects.

Outside of the taught curriculum, students engage with a wide-ranging enrichment programme, with timetabled periods given over to extra- and super-curricular pursuits which students can tailor to their own interests and needs, and which will vary throughout the year.  Enrichment experiences range from recreational sports, to debate club, to volunteering at local primary schools, to competing in the Bar Mock Trial (for which we have been regional champions for 3 years in a row) and allow students to develop skills that will last a life time.

Students in our Sixth Form are critical to the life of our school on a wider scale, taking up roles such as Head Student, Executive Officers, House and Academic Officers, as well as being trained peer mentors. Developing and honing leadership skills and being able to leave RGS ready to succeed in future pathways is essential to our A level programme.

You can be confident that if you choose RGS for your Sixth Form studies that you will access excellent teaching, from staff who are knowledgeable and experienced, in a Sixth Form community that aims to develop life-long learners who have the skills to excel in whatever pathway they choose to pursue.

FAQs

What are the overall entry requirements?

Students hoping to study at the Rochester Grammar School will have 5 grades of 6 or above at GCSE, and will have 5s in Mathematics and either English literature or language.

What are the subject entry requirements?

Entry requirements vary between subjects and can be found in the course directory on our school website here: https://rochestergrammar.org.uk/site-rochester/assets/files/5008/sixth_form_course_directory.pdf

How many A levels do I need to pick?

All students at RGS will complete 3 A levels as a minimum. Students have the option to then also select either a fourth A level, an AS level (available in Maths, Further Maths, French, German and Spanish), an EPQ, or Japanese, in which students will have the option to complete a full GCSE should they wish to.

What is an EPQ?

EPQ stands for the Extended Project Qualification, which is a level 3 course equivalent to half an A level. It involved students researching a topic of interest that goes beyond the taught curriculum, to either write a research report of up to 5000 words or to produce something informed by their research, supported by an essay of approximately 1500 words which explains how they made their product. Students are able to select this in addition to 3 A levels, to be completed in year 12, or can complete this at the end of Year 12 / beginning of Year 13.

Do I have to add an additional qualification like EPQ?

You do not have to add an additional qualification or a fourth A level, an AS, and EPQ or Japanese, but doing so will help you to stand out in the competitive world after school and can make you appear a more attractive candidate for employers or universities. We expect that most students will opt to study 3 A levels plus an additional qualification, but you will be able to study just 3.
